Amazon has officially announced that it will shut down its Appstore for Android devices on August 20, 2025. This decision also includes the discontinuation of Amazon Coins, a digital currency used within the ecosystem for purchasing games and apps.
Details of the Closure
The tech giant informed developers through a recent notice that they would no longer be able to submit new apps to the Amazon Appstore following the closure date. This move signifies a strategic shift in Amazon’s approach to its digital distribution services, particularly focusing on enhancing the app experience on its proprietary devices.
Impact on Users and Developers
From August 20, 2025, Android users will no longer have access to download or purchase apps from the Amazon Appstore. In addition, Amazon will be phasing out its Amazon Coins program, which was an alternative payment method within the Appstore. The company has committed to refunding any Amazon Coins customers still hold as of the closure date, ensuring that users are not left at a disadvantage.
Rationale Behind the Decision
According to a company spokesperson, the decision to close the Appstore on Android and end the Amazon Coins program stems from usage patterns observed by Amazon. The spokesperson noted, «We’ve decided to discontinue the Amazon Appstore on Android to focus our efforts on the Appstore experience on our own devices, as that’s where the overwhelming majority of our customers currently engage with it.» This statement highlights the company’s intent to concentrate on providing a more integrated and possibly enhanced user experience on Amazon devices such as Fire TV and Fire Tablets.
Future of Amazon Appstore
While the Appstore will no longer be available on Android, Amazon confirmed that it would continue to operate on its own devices. This continued support ensures that users of Amazon’s Fire TV and Fire Tablets will still have access to their apps and services via the Appstore, maintaining an ecosystem that supports Amazon’s hardware.
The upcoming discontinuation of the Amazon Appstore for Android marks a significant pivot in Amazon’s strategy, focusing more on its hardware ecosystem. This move could reshape how Amazon approaches app distribution and digital currency in the future, possibly signaling a more targeted and device-centric approach to software and service offerings.
